In order to help prevent vision issues later in life, it’s important to practice good eye care. There are several simple things we can do every day that helps protect our eyes and prevent problems in the future.
Practice Preventative Eye Care
Preventative eye care is a multi-faceted approach we can all do. The first step in preventing vision problems is to have regular eye exams with your family eye care provider. It’s important to know your family health history too since certain health or eye conditions can be hereditary.
Live a Healthy Lifestyle
By living a healthy lifestyle you can help your eyes and your vision. This means eating a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables, Omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients. But a healthy lifestyle also means regular exercise, a good night’s sleep, and to not smoke (or quit). Each of these components to a healthy life actually help our eyes too.
Protect Your Eyes
A simple way to prevent vision issues is to protect our eyes every day. This can mean wearing protective glasses when you work outside or finish a DIY project at home. Protective glasses are important when you play sports too. Protect your eyes when you are outside for long periods of time as well. Wear sunglasses if you work outside or plan on spending the day outdoors.
Finally, avoid hazards to your eyes and be smart. Avoid fireworks, using harsh chemicals or cleaners without protection, or putting your eyes too close to things that can explode.
