You may not even realize it, but some of the daily habits we have can actually be harmful to our eyes. Here are some of the worst habits you should stop immediately.
Stop Touching & Rubbing Your Eyes!
The most common mistake that people make is touching or rubbing their eyes. First, you can easily poke or rub your eyes too hard. This can cause broken blood vessels and inflammation.
But our eyes are protected by a mucous membrane, which is a great place for bacteria to grow. When you shake someone’s hand and immediately rub your eyes, those germs are transmitted to your eyes which could lead to a cold or infection.
Other Common Mistakes
A common mistake that contact wearers do is to sleep in their contact lenses. Even contacts approved to be worn when you sleep can contribute to an increased risk of a corneal ulcer. Short naps are fine, but consider taking out your contacts when you go to sleep at night.
Another mistake is going to sleep in your makeup. Leaving your makeup on throughout the night can clog the glands around your eyes and lead to irritated skin, pimples, and even styes.
Finally, do not use expired contact solution or eye drops. Each of these solutions have ingredients meant to kill germs and bacteria. Make sure they are working properly by using them before they expire.
